18 FLASHERS
Littelfuse Flashers meet D.O.T., S.A.E. and all applicable state and federal requirements.
Type of Load
Variable vs. Exact:
• Variable load flashers will handle a range of lamps as needed up to the total specified.
• Exact load flashers will flash only the number of lamps for which it is rated. These are typically for OEM
replacement applications.
Lamp Capacity
The total number of lamps energized in the circuit.
Terminal Count
Two or three terminals — always match the terminal configuration being replaced.
Design
Thermal vs. Electronic:
• Thermal (Bi-Metal) flashers are a mechanical device that operate through the heating and cooling of a
bi-metal strip, opening and closing the contacts, causing the lamps to “flash”.
• Electronic flashers are comprised of an electro-mechanical relay with an opposing A and B coil. A
capacitor prevents one coil from pulling in relay contacts until it is fully charged. The charging and dis-
charging of the capacitor along with a resistor determine the flash rate and set duty cycle (on/off time).
In some cases you can replace a Thermal Flasher with an Electronic Flasher but never replace an
Electronic Flasher with a Thermal Flasher.
