Designing the Future

The following pages present world-class AC polypropylene
capacitors from Siemens Matsushita Components. These
capacitors are produced by EHC in Nashik, India.
Our wide range of AC capacitors extends from 250 to
600 Vac rated voltage and from 0,8 to 120
µF
capacitance.
In additon we manufacture a large choice of custom
designs for special requirements. We can also deliver a
large selection of metallized film from our Film Metallizing

1
Introduction
1.1 Basic construction
The MPP (Metallized
PolyPropylene
Film) consists of two
sheets of metallized polypropylene film, each with a thin
layer of vacuum deposited metal on one side. The edge of
each electrode is bonded by a metal endspray. The
endspray serves as the connection surface for one end of
each tab.
Simple connection
The rapid expansion of the plasma in the breakdown
channel causes it to cool after a few microseconds, thus
quenching the discharge. The insulated region thus
resulting around the former faulty area will cause the
capacitor to regain its full operation ability.

1.2 Metallized film capacitors
Capacitors with polypropylene metallized film have a
decisive advantage over capacitors with metal foil
electrodes: they have self-healing properties.
These self-healing properties permit utilization of the full
dielectric strength of the dielectric materials of metallized
film capacitors, allowing the reduction of the size and the
weight of capacitors.
1.3 Self-healing properties
The metal coatings, which are vacuum-deposited directly
onto the plastic film, have a thickness of only 20 ... 50 nm. If
the dielectric breakdown field strength is exceeded locally
at weak points, at pores or impurities in the dielectric, a
dielectric breakdown occurs. The energy released by the
arc discharge in the breakdown channel is sufficient to
totally evaporate the thin metal coating in the vicinity of the
channel.

2.2 Dissipation factor
The dissipation factor tan

is the ratio of the equivalent
series resistance to the capacitive reactance in the
equivalent series circuit, or of effective power (power
dissipation) to reactive power for sine-wave loads.
Dissipation factor is indicated by the tangent of the loss
angle and measured at 120 Hz.

3.1 Upper and lower category temperature
In the respective generic specification, the upper category

4.1 Mechanical robustness of terminals (only for wire
terminals)
Half of terminals are subjected to a 20N load and bent
consecutively twice. The other half of terminals, with the
same load, are rotated 180°.
4.2 Fixing
Capacitors provided with fixing threaded bolts have 5 Nm
as max. admissible torque for M8 bolts and 12 Nm for M 12
bolts.
4.3 Resistance to vibration
The capacitor‘s ability to withstand vibration, e.g. as occurs
in applications involving rotating machinery, is tested in
accordance with IEC 6068-2-6 under the following test
conditions:

2.4 Self-inductance
The self-inductance is produced by the inductance of the
terminals and element. Due to the kind of contacting in self-
healing capacitors (large-area metal endspraying covering
all windings), the self-inductance is particularly low.

manufacturing process and final inspection – is
accompanied by quality assurance measures. Routine
tests are performed on every capacitor, from winding to
