The progress of the advanced computing cores coming frommicroprocessor manufacturers such as Intel and AMD havenecessitated a change in the topology of the switchingregulators traditionally used to power these processor cores.Multiphase buck regulators have proven to be the topologyof choice for such high-current applications. However, thedistributed power system architecture of these computerscontinue to have a need for other sub-system specificvoltages. The HIP6521 was created to complement amultiphase buck controller in creating a complete powersolution for the typical Pentium 4 system. Athlon-classprocessor based systems (AMD) may also benefit from theHIP6521. [1]
