The new UTOR series has been specifically developed to reduce the size, weight and cost of high
performance inverters by maximizing ripple current and thus reducing the number of conventional
capacitors required per bank. The ultra high ripple currents, high vibration resistance and high
transient voltage protection make the UTOR ideal for EV inverters or any application where extreme
conditions must be met. The patented toroidal design of the UTOR also offers the user forced air,
heat-sink and fluid convection cooling options, not available with traditional capacitors, to further
enhance the operating performance.

UTOR Series
UTOR Construction and Cooling Options
The UTOR is designed to provide the ultra high ripple current capability required for the next
generation of inverters. The patented toroidal construction offers optimum heat dissipation at the very
core (traditional “hot-spot”) of the capacitor’s element, resulting in a reduced internal temperature
rise and allowing for higher ripple current.
The element employs an extended cathode foil for intimate contact to the case, creating an internal
heat sink and consequently better dissipation via conduction, while the outer case is crimped into the
element for better dissipation via convection. The UTOR’s toroidal construction is ideal for cooling
techniques including heat-sink posts, forced air, and even fluid convection. There are numerous
mounting options, which can be customized to the designer’s mechanical needs and intended

Life Validation Test
The following specifications shall be satisfied when the capacitors are restored to 25 C
after subjecting them to the DC rated voltage for 5,000 hours at 105 C with the rated ripple
current applied. The sum of DC voltage and peak AC voltage must not exceed the full rated
voltage of the capacitors.

Shelf Test
The following specifications shall be satisfied when the capacitors are restored to 25 C after
exposing them for 1,000 hours at 105 C without voltage applied. The rated voltage shall be
applied to the capacitors for a minimum of 30 minutes, at least 24 hours and not more than
48 hours before the measurements.

Capacitance Tolerance: M = 20%
Capacitance Value: Expressed in Microfarads. The first two digits are
significant figures, and the third digit indicates the number of zeros
for capacitance of 100 F or more. R indicates the decimal point for
capacitance less than 100 F (e.g. R47 = .47 F; 4R7 = 4.7 F;
47R = 47 F; 471 = 470 F; 472 = 4,700 F; 473 = 47,000 F ).
